When SPA took possession of the old Central Methodist Church in 1996, you could see the sky through the bell tower ceiling. Water poured in when it rained. Windows were broken or boarded up, graffiti covered walls inside and out, and mountains of trash filled every room in this 60,000-square-foot complex.

S
ince then, the Martha Nored Chapel, now known as the Rose Chapel, has been renovated with beautiful new pews and stained glass windows.  The front yard now blooms with perennials of many varieties and colors. A new roof for the Rose Chapel was a combined donation from Quarles Lumber and Lon Smith Roofing.  A new air conditioning system was installed in the ballroom and chapel through a generous loan and donated labor from Scott Air Conditioning of Arlington. Empire Roofing replaced the rotted bell tower roof.  The ballroom and reception room are now used regularly for parties, concerts, and community events, and the chapel provides a venue for weddings and other ceremonies.

T
his has all come about through time (and money!) donated by many individuals.  60,000 square feet is a lot of building, and an enormous amount of work remains to be done to turn the Hall into a vital community facility for Forth Worth. We can use labor, money, and materials.  SPA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so all donations are tax-deductible. Make checks payable to SPA, and mail to Southside Preservation Association, 1519 Lipscomb, Fort Worth, TX 76104.
