SPH Presents Concerts in the Chapel: Jana Pochop with Tipps and Obermiller

SPH presents yet another beautiful evening of music with the wonderful Jana Pochop, joined by Fort Worth's own Hilary Tipps and Steve Obermiller. As usual, there will also be an open jam session after the show so bring those instruments with you!

"Calling Jana Pochop a “songwriter” is like calling Gandalf a guy who can throw together a nice fireworks display for a birthday party." - Texas Music Magazine

Singer-songwriter Jana Pochop is a wanderer with a penchant for folk pop songs and universe pondering. Jana hails from culturally rich Albuquerque, NM and moved to Austin to immerse herself in the Texas music scene, playing clubs, house concerts, and touring nationally while building her singer-songwriter career. She was a Kerrville New Folk Finalist in 2022 and then headed off to New York City to earn a Master's in Songwriting and Production at Berklee NYC. She's currently based in Albuquerque, producing her own music as well as projects for others remotely and at Howlin' Dog Studio in Alamosa, CO.

Jana is set to release her first self-produced album, Powerlines, in Spring of 2024. Produced mainly in her Brooklyn room while studying at Berklee, Jana was also able to incorporate Impulse Response Collection into her thesis along with songwriting and production. This focus resulted in Jana spending a day at Georgia O'Keeffe's Home and Studio in Abiquiu, NM in early 2023. Jana captured the distinctive reverberations of O'Keeffe's painting studio, living room, and bedroom, infusing them into the sonic tapestry of her upcoming album.

As one review put it, "Jana consistently paints an image of humanity that’s unusual yet accessible, fusing the vastness of the world with the deeply personal emotions of the individual in a blissfully poetic and moving fashion."

It took no time at all for Fort Worth, Texas songwriters Hilary Tipps and Steve Obermiller to fall in love and start their lives together. But it was a decade of trying to create life, deal with death and build careers before they wrote their first songs together.

“Love (and other mysteries)” is a debut album that bursts open a dream deferred. It is a collection of songs with equal parts contemplation, wisdom and simple fun.

Though you might call them Folk or Americana, Hilary and Steve are not genre-specific songwriters. Just as they write about every aspect of life and living, they use every style of music to suit the song at hand. In doing so, they have created an album that takes the listener on a joyous ride: never predictable and worthy of playlist after playlist.

As for live, whether performing in intimate listening rooms or on festival stages, they bring a connection of energy and charm unique to a couple dedicated to each other, their music and their audience.

Southside Preservation Hall and Southside Preservation Association are supported in part by a grant from Arts Fort Worth.
